Our History

The following was provided by Barbara Strudwick.

On Saturday night, May 30, 1981, Bruce from San Diego Walkabout International led a walk in Beverly Hills. To the best of my knowledge, Dorothy Walcer was the only one on that walk who later became a Footloose regular. On Sunday morning, May 31, 1981, Bruce led another walk around downtown Los Angeles. Marian and I were on that walk and that is when I feel that Walkabout International in the Los Angeles area started. Bill, Norma and Rolf also became involved in the beginning. Enid and Susan from San Diego helped us to get started. We tried to organize walks and to get people interested in showing up for the walks. In the beginning, we were lucky to get one walk per month. The first newsletter was October, 1981. Walks were in Downey, led by Jean; Vernon, led by Jack; USC-Adams area, led by Linda. The newsletter was produced from San Diego. In January, 1984 we started producing the newsletter from the Los Angeles area.  It was printed and mailed monthly. In 1986, Barbara became historian. From the start, there were many helpful coordinators , but they were numerous and names were frequently added and removed, so I am not going to try to list them all here. In November, 1986 we removed ourselves from the Walkabout organization and became an informal social group named "Footloose". Administration, newsletter, editing, finance, etc., would be done by Footloose. Georgine became the chief coordinator. Publication and circulation of the newsletter now became once every two months instead of monthly. In July, 1990 Jan became the chief coordinator. Publication and circulation of the newsletter became quarterly. In December, 1992, or thereabouts, Morris became the chief coordinator.
