Take the eastbound 210 Freeway past the I-15 and past the I-215 to the Waterman/Highway 18 turnoff. The sign also says Lake Arrowhead. Turn left on Waterman and take Highway 18 up the mountain to the Highway 138/Crestline turnoff. Take Highway 138 into Crestline, but continue straight on Lake Drive where 138 curves to the left. Turn right on Lake Gregory then left on San Moritz. Continue to the parking lot on the left.
We will walk around Lake Gregory, which is the only flat place in Crestline.

SATURDAY, JULY 17, 2010 – 9:00 AM – VENICE

Take the westbound 10 Freeway to Lincoln. Turn left on Lincoln to Pico and right on Pico. Go to Main Street and turn left. Turn left on Rose and go two blocks to Rose Café. If possible, park on Rose between Hampton and Fourth. Street parking may be filled, so you may have to park at the pay lot just east of Rose Café at $1/hour.
The walk will total about four miles. We will first walk along the beach to the Venice Pier. Coming back the shops should be open. We will return to the Rose Café for lunch. (Their phone number is 310 399-0711). The café opens at 8:00 AM, so if you arrive early, you may want to have a cup of coffee.

Take the southbound 110 Freeway (Harbor Freeway) until it ends. Exit onto Gaffey and continue south on Gaffey, following all the twists and turns until it ends. Park at Paseo Del Mar, Point Fermin Park.
There are bathrooms in Point Fermin Park, and you may get hot coffee at Walkers Café. We will start at the Point Fermin Lighthouse and explore the adjacent residential area. Then we will go to explore the new park area and Royal Palms area.
Lunch will be at the Grinder on 5th and Harbor Blvd. in waterfront San Pedro.

SATURDAY, JULY 31, 2010 – 9:30 AM – CARPINTERIA
Note the later than usual starting time. Meet at the corner of Sandyland Road and Ash Avenue at the Carpinteria Salt Marsh Reserve. Park on the street. Restrooms are available. Click here for map.
From the northbound 101 Freeway, exit at Casitas Pass Road, which is about 12-15 miles north of the city of Ventura. Cross over the freeway and turn right where the road ends at Carpinteria Avenue. Turn left at Linden Avenue (approximately half a mile). Turn right on Sandyland Road (approximately one mile). The road ends at Ash Avenue (about three blocks).
Our 4-5 mile route begins with an exhilarating “beach and bluffs” walk offering many opportunities to observe coastal flora, fauna, and sea life at different levels. Returning from the observation point on the bluffs, we will continue along the trail to Carpinteria’s pedestrian-friendly main street. Our destination in town is the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History, 956 Maple Avenue, featuring attractive displays of memorabilia, artifacts, and quilts from the Chumash Indian, Mission, Rancho and American Pioneer periods. A small donation is requested. We may also browse the popular museum-sponsored flea market that takes place on the last Saturday of the month. Along the way various points of interest will be pointed out, which you can explore on your own following lunch at Senor Frog’s, 872 Linden Avenue, (805) 684-9352, or at one of the other local restaurants, food stands, and/or ice cream parlors.
The "beach and bluffs" section of the walk is along a sandy beach, up a flight of wooden stairs to a groomed dirt trail (alternate route available); the "town" section is along level paved sidewalks.

From the 405 Freeway in either direction, exit on Wilshire West. Take Wilshire to 16Th. Street in Santa Monica and go right four blocks to Montana. Turn left one block to 15th. Starbucks is on the southwest corner of Montana and 15Th.. Allow enough time to find a parking spot since this is a popular shopping area.

From the northbound 110 Freeway, take the Marmion Way (Avenue 64) exit. Stay on Avenue 64 to York Blvd. Turn right unto York and go to Avenue 66. Turn left and go to 802 Avenue 66.
From the eastbound 134 Freeway, exit on Figueroa Street. Stay on Figueroa to York Blvd. Turn left on York and go to Avenue 66. Turn left and go to 802 Avenue 66.
From the 210 Freeway take the 2 Freeway south to 134 (toward Pasadena). Exit at Figueroa, go south about 2 miles, turn left on York, and left again on Avenue 66 to 802 Avenue 66

It’s party time!! Time once again to celebrate Carol’s birthday.
We will walk up the Arroyo Seco Canyon – about three miles total. The exact mileage depends on how hot the day is. Then we will go back to my house for our Pot Luck party.
Please bring your favorite dish, already prepared. There is not enough space in the kitchen for last minute preparation. Also bring serving utensils and coolers if possible.
You may bring fruit, salad, sandwiches, casserole, etc. to serve six to eight hungry walkers. Bring anything but dessert. We will supply ice cream, cake, soft drinks, coffee, and table service.
All are invited to bring your swimsuits, and we will have fun, as usual.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 28, 2010 – – PACIFIC PALISADES AND TEMESCAL CANYON PARK

From westbound Sunset Blvd., turn left on Carey Street, then keep right at Toyopa Drive and turn right on Alma Real Drive. Look to your left for entrance to parking lot inside the park. Restrooms are available in the Recreation Center building, which opens at 9:00 AM.
We will walk on residential streets opening to ocean vistas. We will cross Sunset Blvd. and do about one mile round trip in Temescal Canyon Park. The return trip to our cars will take us through the village business center. There we can have lunch at Kay & Dave’s Cantina, 15246 W. Sunset Blvd., Pacific Palisades 90272, or at another nearby place. Total mileage is almost four miles.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2010 – 9:00 AM – LAGUNA NIGUEL REGIONAL PARK
Meet at the entrance to the park, which is at 28241 La Paz Road, Laguna Niguel 92677. (Thomas Guide [OC] p 951, G1). Click here for map.
Take either the southbound 405 or the southbound 5. The 405 merges with the 5 past Irvine. Continue on Highway 5 to the La Paz off ramp. Turn right on La Paz and continue until the entrance to the park. Turn left after the entrance and park near Shelter 6 between the playground and the rest room on the right. Parking is $5.00 on weekends, so try to car pool.
Bring quarters or one dollar bills for the automatic parking meters in case there is no payer. We will walk in the riparian environment of Sulphur Creek and the Sulphur Creek Reservoir, where there are inclines but no steep hills. The length of the walk will depend upon the weather.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2010 - 9:00 AM - PALOS VERDES OCEANFRONT TRAILS
Meet in front of the Montessori School in the parking lot of the Golden Cove Shopping Center which is at the intersection of Hawthorne Blvd and Palos Verdes Drive West. (Thomas [LA] p. 822, G4). Click here for map.
- From the San Fernando Valley: Exit the 405 freeway at Hawthorne, and turn south (towards Lawndale). Take Hawthorne about 13 miles to Palos Verdes Drive West.
- From Orange County: Exit the 405 freeway at the 110 freeway and take it south to PCH. Turn right on PCH and go 3 miles to Crenshaw. Turn left on Crenshaw and go 3.4 miles to Crest. Turn right on Crest for 1.6 miles to Hawthorne. Turn left on Hawthorne and go about 2 miles to Palos Verdes Drive West.
We will walk about 5 miles at a moderate pace on sidewalks and nicely groomed dirt trails, with minimal elevation gain. This will be a loop, with the first part in a residential area above the ocean. The remainder will be on ocean bluff trails in the Lunada Bay area, and also in front of the ‘Oceanfront’ housing development of multimillion dollar homes. Rain cancels. Heavy rain on preceding days shortens walk to 3 miles. Lunch at ocean view restaurant where we parked.
