SATURDAY, JANUARY 9, 2010 – 9:00 AM – OXNARD

From the 101 Freeway in either direction exit on Victoria. Go south on Victoria Avenue about 4.4 miles to Wooley Road, which is one signal past Fifth. Go through the intersection and turn right in front of Vons. This is a new shopping center. There is a yellow building in the center. Park near the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, which is near the center of this new shopping mall.
We will walk in a new development near the water. We will see lovely homes and new docks. The walk will be about four miles. Lunch will be nearby at the Channel Islands area. Sun may be strong since the trees haven’t grown up yet. Therefore be sure to bring a hat.
Lunch will be at The Greek at the Harbor, 1583 Spinnaker Drive.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 16, 2010 – 9:00 AM – BILL BOWMAN’S 100TH BIRTHDAY

From the San Fernando Valley and points north and west of La Crescenta, take the 210 Freeway toward Pasadena. Exit on Pennsylvania Avenue (exit 17A). Turn left on Pennsylvania and after 1.1 miles turn right on Orange Avenue. After one more mile, turn left on Rosemont and Two Strike Park is about 0.2 miles away.
From Pasadena and points east and south of La Crescenta, take the westbound 210 Freeway to Ocean View Blvd. (exit 18). Turn right on Ocean View Blvd., then left at Foothill. After about 0.5 miles, turn right on Rosemont and go about 0.9 miles to 5107.
We will take an easy walk in the hills in the residential area of this foothill community. After the walk we will have lunch at Magpie’s Grill, 1938 Foothill Blvd., La Crescenta. Lunch will be about 11:30 AM. The restaurant has a small parking lot, so you may want to park on Indiana, which is the side street just west of the restaurant.
Bill Bowman, who celebrated his 100th birthday this month, will be our guest of honor. Footloose will pay for the lunches for him and his wife, Norma. We hope that all can at least be at the restaurant, and those who can should take the walk, too.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 23, 2010 9:00 AM CYPRESS
Meet on Katella Avenue at the entrance to the Los Alamitos Race Track (Thomas [Orange County] p. 797, CD 2). 4961 Katella Ave, 90720 Click here for map.
From the 605 Freeway in either direction, exit on Katella Avenue in Los Alamitos.Go east a few miles until you come to Los Alamitos Race Track. There is a signal light at the entrance to the race track. Parking is free in the general parking area and restrooms are available in the shopping center across the street.
We will walk about four miles round trip on paved, level streets along Katella Avenue. We will walk through a nice industrial area to our destination, the Navy Golf Course. We will have lunch there at the Eagle Nest Club House. If weather permits, we will eat outside on the patio overlooking the beautiful grounds.
After lunch we will walk back to our cars at the race track. If you wish you may stay at the track and explore the grounds. There is live racing by satellite from Santa Anita and tracks back east. You may place bets by satellite, Admission to the track for seniors is $2.00. If you wish to spend the day here, quarter horse racing starts at 7:00 PM.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 30, 2010 – 9:00 AM – PLAYA DEL REY
Meet near the rest rooms in the parking lot at 6660 Esplanade Street, next to the Del Rey Lagoon, Playa del Rey 90293 (Thomas [LA] p. 702, A7). Click here for map.
From the southbound 405 Freeway, take the Marina Freeway (90) west to its end at Culver Blvd. Turn left (west) on Culver and go almost to the coast, One short block past Pershing Drive (where there is a light) turn right on Esplanade and either park on the street or in the free parking lot on your left just past Argonaut Street.
From the northbound 405, take the Manchester off-ramp (north of LAX). Go west several miles to Pershing. Turn right on Pershing, then left on Culver. Go one block to Esplanade and follow the directions above.
If the weather is good, you will have beautiful and interesting views of the Del Rey Lagoon (with wintering birds) and the entire northern Los Angeles basin, from snow-covered San Gabriel Mountains, the Santa Monica Mountains, and various cities such as Playa Vista, Marina del Rey, and the coast. We will start with an easy one-mile walk around the east side of the Lagoon, to the Ballona Creek and Marina del Rey outlets to the Pacific and back on the west wide (including the beach if you like). Then, unless you are really energetic, we will drive through the hillier part of Playa del Rey to a pre-determined spot. Maps will be provided. We will walk in a nice, relatively flat hilltop residential area and along a wide concrete path on the north side of West Bluff. There are fabulous views. The total distance will be three to four miles. We will have lunch at a restaurant to be determined.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2010 – 9:00 AM CHANDLER BOULEVARD, BURBANK

From the San Fernando Valley, take the eastbound 101 Freeway. After Laurel Canyon, stay on the two left lanes to get on the 134 Freeway. Exit the 134 at Cahuenga Blvd. Turn left (north) on Cahuenga and then turn right on Chandler. Proceed to Clybourn and park either on Chandler or Clybourn.
From Pasadena and points east, you may take the westbound 210 to the 134 and continue west on the 134 to Cahuenga, then follow the above directions.
From the downtown area take the northwest bound 101 to Vineland; go right (north) on Vineland to Moorpark. Turn right, cross Lankershim, and continue to Cahuenga. Turn right and follow the above directions.
From West Los Angeles, Santa Monica, or vicinity, take the 405 north to the 101. Follow the Los Angeles signs to get on the 101 and go east to get on the 134, then follow directions as above.
We will walk on a new walking/biking trail along Chandler Boulevard in Burbank. This is a trail that is most enjoyable to walk on and is nicely landscaped.

From the 101 Freeway in either direction, exit at Laurel Canyon and go north two blocks to Riverside Drive. Park on the street if possible. If you must park in Gelson’s parking lot, park at the rear of Gelson’s
We will walk for about 3.5 miles in a neighborhood of Valley Village. The walk will pass a couple of parks and then be mostly residential.
Yoga stretches are included in this walk at no extra charge.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2010 – 9:00 AM – CALIFORNIA LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY, THOUSAND OAKS
Meet in front of the Welcome Center, California Lutheran University, 60 West Olsen Road. There is a sign out front. Click here for map.
Take the westbound 118 Freeway to Exit 22A (Madera Road South). After 0.3 miles, turn right onto View Line Drive. Almost immediately, turn right onto North Madera Road. After 3.7 miles, North Madera Road becomes East Olsen Road. After another 3.9, miles, make a U-turn onto West Olsen Road. 60 West Olsen Road is on your right.
The entrance to the University is around the corner on Montclef Bouldvard. You may park on Montclef Boulevard and go to the Welcome center. Restrooms are nearby. We will walk about three miles, exploring the pretty grounds of this small private University, get a little taste of the college life, and view the gorgeous stained glass windows of the chapel. The original Pederson Ranch House is on the grounds as well.
The Centrum Cafe on campus may be closed on Saturday. If it is, we can have lunch at nearby The Oaks, at the Lazy Dog Café.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2010 – 9:00 AM – PASADENA
Meet at the entrance of Singer Park, which is at the southwest corner of W California Blvd. and S St. John (Thomas [LA] p. 565, G6). Click here for map.
From the eastbound 134, exit on Orange Grove, go right (south) to California and turn left. Singer Park is on your right one block from Orange Grove.
From the 210 Freeway, stay on the freeway until it ends at Del Mar. Go left on Del Mar one block to St. John, turn right and continue on St. John to California. Singer Park is across California on your right.
Our walk will take us past the homes that volunteers for the Pasadena Symphony use for their fund raising walks. This is less than about three miles in length, so we will walk about one or two more miles in this very scenic neighborhood.
We will have lunch either in Burger Continental or in Hamburger Hamlet.

SATURDAY, MARCH 6, 2010 – 9:15 AM -DANA POINT HARBOR

From the southbound 5 Freeway, exit at Camino las Ramblas (just past San Juan Capistrano) which then merges with Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1), Follow PCH toward Dana Point to Golden Lantern, turn left and continue on Golden Lantern until it ends at Dana Point Harbor Drive.
We will walk down Cove Drive to the Marine Institute/Museum where we will see a replica of The Pilgrim. We will then walk past a popular beach/picnic area, the Marina, shops, and on to Doheny State Beach. The walk will be about 3-4 miles on flat, paved surfaces. We will have the opportunity to people watch, bird watch, and boat watch. Heavy rain cancels.

SATURDAY, MARCH 13, 2010 – 9:00 AM – PACIFIC PALISADES AND TEMESCAL CANYON PARK

From westbound Sunset Blvd., turn left on Carey Street, then keep right at Toyopa Drive and turn right on Alma Real Drive. Look to your left for entrance to parking lot inside the park. Restrooms are available in the Recreation Center building, which opens at 9:00 AM.
We will walk on residential streets opening to ocean vistas. We will cross Sunset Blvd. and do about one mile round trip in Temescal Canyon Park. The return trip to our cars will take us through the village business center. There we can have lunch at Kay & Dave’s Cantina, 15246 W. Sunset Blvd., Pacific Palisades 90272, or at another nearby place. Total mileage is almost four miles.

SATURDAY, MARCH 20, 2010 – 9:00 AM – HOLLYWOOD BY METRO RAIL
Meet at the North Hollywood Red Line Station on Lankershim Blvd. and Chandler (Thomas [LA] p. 562, J2).

Meet near the ticket machines. I called Metro rail and was told that on weekends, seniors ride for $0.25 one way. Bring quarters. Parking is at the end of the station lot. Parking close to the station lot is by permit only. Watch the signs. If you live in the San Fernando Valley close to the Orange Line, you may take the Orange Line east. This line ends across the street from the North Hollywood Metro Station. You may park in one of the Orange Line parking lots. Ticket machines are at the parking lots.
Our destination is the Highland station in Hollywood. Restrooms are across the street at McDonalds. Our walk will be a little over two miles. We will go on Hollywood Blvd. past Grauman’s, the Kodak Theatre, and get a view of the Magic Castle. We will continue on Hollywood Blvd. to Ivar. We will turn right on Ivar and go past the library to Sunset and back to our starting point, where we will have lunch at the California Pizza Kitchen.

SATURDAY, MARCH 27. 2010 – 9:00 AM – CALABASAS
Meet in front of Ralphs Market in The Commons Mall, 4754 Commons Way, Calabasas 91302 (Thomas [LA] p.559, E4.) Click here for map.
From the northbound 101 Freeway, exit at Parkway Calabasas. Turn left and cross the bridge over the freeway to Calabasas Road (first signal). Turn left and proceed to The Commons Mall entrance at Park Centre Drive or Commons Way. Turn right into the parking lot and park opposite the entrance to Ralphs Market.
From the southbound 101 Freeway, exit at Parkway Calabasas, turn left on Calabasas Road and follow the directions as above.
NOTE: Do not exit at the Mulholland off ramp in Woodland Hills because the Farmers Market is at that end of Old Town and traffic is heavy.
Restrooms are available in Ralphs as well as midway through the walk
The walk will take us through an attractive and beautifully landscaped residential section of Calabasas beginning on paved level terrain that becomes hill after the first mile. An alternate route is available for those who prefer a less strenuous walk. Crossing over the freeway, we will visit the historic LA Pet Park. Those who prefer a shorter walk may choose to head back to the parking lot or visit the Farmers Market at this time.
Returning from the Pet Park to The Commons, we will have lunch at King’s Fish House ([818] 225-1979). Following lunch, you may browse Old Town on your own; visit LA’s Cultural Monument No. 1, the Leonis Adobe; or explore the Calabasas Creek Mini-Park.
