For all of the walks listed, a special link (“Click here for map”) is provided that uses Mapquest to show a map of the area where the walk starts. When you see the map you can then choose  ‘Directions: To’, and enter your home address to get exact driving directions from your address to the starting point of the walk. Mapquest will retain your address so you can access it in the future. SATURDAY, JANUARY 7, 2012 – 9:00 AM – SIMI VALLEY – TAPO PARK

 Meet at the Tapo Park parking lot near the swings and restroom. 3700 Avenida Simi. Click here for map.

 From the westbound 118 Freeway, exit at Tapo Canyon Road and turn right (north) to the light at Avenida Simi and turn left.  Go past the Senior Center one block to Tapo Park parking lot on your left.

 From the eastbound 118 Freeway, exit at Tapo Canyon Road and turn left (north). Then follow the directions above.          

 We will walk through Tapo Park past the Vets Memorial to visit the newer spacious Senior Center. We will then walk through a large grassy area to visit the Library.  We will then walk back through Tapo Park past the Vets Memorial, and if time permits we will walk through the neighborhood.

 We will have lunch at the Junkyard Café.  The clever menu can be seen online at www.thejunkyardcafe.com The address is 2585 Cochran, and the phone number is (805) 520-5865.

From Tapo Park, return to Tapo Canyon Road and then turn right (south).and continue to Cochran.  Turn right on Cochran and go one-half block past Sycamore Road in the back of the small shopping center.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 14, 2012 – 9:00 AM – KENNETH HAHN STATE RECREATION AREA

Meet at the Gwen Moore Lake parking lot on your right, just near the kiosk (Thomas [LA] p. 673 A2-3) Parking is $6.00 per car,  Restrooms are here. If you use a GPS or a map program, you will map to 4100 S La Cienega.  However, this number does not exist. But using this number with your GPS or map program will get you within a few yards of the park entrance. Click here for map.

 From the north, east, or west take any route to the Santa Monica Freeway (10) and exit the freeway at La Cienega. Go south on La Cienega about 1.8 miles past the Jefferson/Rodeo intersection and the Blair Hills exit to the park’s exit ramp.  Turn left over the bridge and into the park and on via the kiosk to the lake’s parking lot.

 From the south take the 405 Freeway.  Exit at La Tijera Blvd. Go northeast on La Tijera and turn left (north) on La Cienega. Go several miles, past Slauson and Stocker, to the park entrance ramp on your right. Proceed to the kiosk and the lake’s parking lot.

 We will aim for 3-4 miles on paved areas and well-maintained trails. There are some hills, but other areas are flat, including the area around the small lake.  We will see some water features, lots of trees, grass, wildflowers, and birds and the oriental and/or hummingbird gardens.  From the higher areas, one can get excellent views of the city in every direction, plus the Baldwin Hills oil field.  Bring a camera and/or binoculars, a hat and good walking shoes.  We will adjust the walk to the weather and the capabilities of the group. SATURDAY, JANUARY 21, 2012 – 9:00 AM – SANTA MONICA’S SUNSET PARK

 Meet in Marine Park parking lot, 1406 Marine Street, Santa Monica, between 16th Street and Margaret Lane (Thomas [LA] p. 671, H3). Click here for map.

 From the 405 Freeway in either direction, take the westbound 10 Freeway or Venice Blvd. to Lincoln Blvd. (Highway 1). Turn left on Lincoln from the 10 Freeway, or right on Lincoln from Venice Blvd, and go to Marine Street in Santa Monica.  Turn east and go about 1/3 mile to the Marine Park parking lot entrance.  The restrooms are in a gray building by a blue signboard.

 An alternate route given by Mapquest is to exit the 10 Freeway at exit 28 (Bundy Drive South.)  Continue on Bundy Drive for about 0.4 mile to Ocean Park Blvd. Turn right and go 1.6 mile to 16th Street. Go 0.4 mile to Marine Street and turn right.  The park is on your left.

We will walk through the Sunset Park neighborhood, which Sunset Magazine some years ago highlighted as a charming historic Santa Monica residential district.   In several spots, the streets go uphill, but moderately, and this will reward us with nice views. We will also walk some business streets.

 Restaurants in this area include family restaurants as well as El Torito, Coco’s, and Carrows.  The walk will be about 3.5 miles.

 SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2012 - 9:00 AM – CALABASAS

 Meet in front of Ralphs Market in The Commons Mall, 4754 Commons Way, Calabasas 91302 (Thomas [LA] p.559, E4). Click here for map.

 From the northbound 101 Freeway, exit at Parkway Calabasas. Turn left and cross the bridge over the freeway to Calabasas Road (first signal).  Turn left and proceed to The Commons Mall entrance at Park Centre Drive or Commons Way. Turn right into the parking lot and park opposite the entrance to Ralphs Market.

 From the southbound 101 Freeway, exit at Parkway Calabasas, turn left on Calabasas Road and follow the directions as above.

 NOTE:  Do not exit at the Mulholland off ramp in Woodland Hills because the Farmers Market is at that end of Old Town and traffic is heavy.

 Restrooms are available in Ralphs as well as midway through the walk

 The walk will take us through an attractive and beautifully landscaped residential section of Calabasas beginning on paved level terrain that becomes hilly after the first mile.  An alternate route is available for those who prefer a less strenuous walk.  Crossing over the freeway, we will visit the historic LA Pet Park.  Those who prefer a shorter walk may choose to head back to the parking lot or visit the Farmers Market at this time.

 Returning from the Pet Park to The Commons, we will have lunch at King’s Fish House ([818] 225-1979). Following lunch, you may browse Old Town on your own; visit LA’s Cultural Monument No. 1, the Leonis Adobe; or explore the Calabasas Creek Mini-Park.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2012 - 9:00 AM - PASADENA, CAL TECH

Meet at the parking garage of Macy’s store in Pasadena. 401 S Lake Ave. (Thomas [LA] p. 565, A5.)  We will wait at the ex-Borders bookstore terrace. Click here for map.

From the eastbound 118 Freeway, go until it ends at the 210 Freeway. Merge with the 210 toward Pasadena and continue until Lake Avenue in Pasadena.  Turn right on Lake and continue south until you reach Macy’s parking garage on the southwest corner of Lake and California..

From the northbound 110, continue until it ends at the Arroyo Parkway. Continue on the Arroyo Parkway to California Avenue. Turn right and continue until Hudson Street, one block before Lake.  Turn left on Hudson and go into the garage about one block away on your right. Park and walk to the front garage entrance on Lake.  The terrace is on the right of the garage entrance.

We will walk about three miles through Cal Tech campus and the surrounding residential streets.  We will return to Lake Avenue and eat lunch at Burger Continental.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2012 = 9:00 AM - TOLUCA LAKE

 Meet at Von’s Market at 301 N. Pass Avenue, Burbank (Thomas [LA] p563, C4). Click here for map.

 From the eastbound 134 Freeway, exit at Pass Avenue, turn left and go across the Freeway. Turn left into the Von’s parking lot.

 From the westbound 134 Freeway, exit at Hollywood Way, turn left into Alameda Avenue. Go four blocks to Pass Avenue, turn right, cross the freeway and turn left into Von’s parking lot.

 There are no more restrooms from Von’s until we stop for a bite at Mo’s restaurant.  We will walk about 3½ miles through residential areas both north and south of the 134 Freeway in Toluca Lake.  On our way back to the cars, we will go to Mo’s restaurant for brunch or lunch. The restaurant is about four blocks from where we parked our cars.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2012 9:00 AM MONTANA TO THE SEA

Meet at Starbucks Coffee, 1426 Montana Avenue, Santa Monica (Thomas [LA] p. 631, E7.) Click here for map.

From the 405 Freeway in either direction, exit on Wilshire West.  Take Wilshire to 16th Street in Santa Monica and go right four blocks to Montana.  Turn left one block to 15th.  Starbucks is on the southwest corner of Montana and 15th.  Allow enough time to find a parking spot since this is a popular shopping area

We will walk toward the ocean to PalisadesPark and return to Montana to enjoy lovely homes and shops.  We will have lunch in the vicinity

SATURDAY, MARCH 3, 2012 – 9:00 AM = LA CRESCENTA

 Meet at the parking lot of Two Strike Park, 5107 Rosemont Avenue, La Crescenta, 91214 (Thomas [LA] p. 504, G7). Click here for map.

 From the 210 Freeway in either direction, exit on Pennsylvania Avenue.  Go north on Pennsylvania to Foothill Blvd., Turn right and go about one mile to Rosemont. Turn left and go about 0.9 miles.  Two Strike Park is on your left.

 We will take an easy walk in the hills in the residential area of this foothill community.

SATURDAY, MARCH 10, 2012 – 9:00 AM – SEPULVEDA BASIN AND WILDLIFE PRESERVE

 We will meet in the parking lot of the Wildlife Preserve located at 6335 Woodley Avenue, Van Nuys 91406. (Thomas [LA] p. 561, F2). Click here for map.

 From the 405 Freeway in either direction, exit on Victory Blvd. Go west on Victory for about 1.5 miles to Woodley. Turn left (south) for just under a mile. Keep your eyes peeled for a driveway marked with a Japanese style blue-tiled, buff colored sign on your left bearing the words, Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant/Japanese Garden. Turn into this driveway, bear to the right, and take the first driveway branch to the right. There is no sign here, but the road is paved.  Go past the cricket fields to the end of the driveway.  Here you will find plenty of parking and rest rooms.

 We will walk approximately 3.5 to 4.0 miles around both the park and the preserve to discover or rediscover this parkland surrounded by mountains, rivers, and streams.  It is here where all visitors can get a sense of what this part of the San Fernando Valley might have been like before agriculture and urban settlement, and what it has to offer to everyone today.  Lunch will follow the walk.

SATURDAY, MARCH 17, 2012 -  9:00 AM VALLEY VILLAGE/N. HOLLYWOOD

Meet at the corner of Laurel Canyon and Riverside Drive near the Gelson’s parking lot (Thomas [LA] p. 562, G3). Click here for map.

From the 101 Freeway in either direction, exit at Laurel Canyon and go north two blocks to Riverside Drive.  Park on the street if possible. If you must park in Gelson’s parking lot, park at the rear of Gelson’s

We will walk for about 3.5 miles in a neighborhood of Valley Village. The walk will pass a couple of parks and then be mostly residential.

Yoga stretches are included in this walk at no extra charge. We will have lunch at Four and Twenty

SATURDAY, MARCH 31, 2912 – 9:00 AM – ALHAMBRA

 Meet in front of the parking structure on N. Chapel just north of E. Main in Alhambra (Thomas [LA], p. 596, B4.) Click here for map.

 From the 134 or 210 Freeway, take the California/Del Mar exit, which will turn into Pasadena Avenue (DO NOT turn on California or Del Mar).  Go south on Pasadena Avenue to where it ends on Columbia Street.  Turn left and then immediately turn right at the next light, which is Fremont Avenue.  Turn left on Alhambra Road, which is the second light after Huntington Drive.  Go past Atlantic and then Garfield and turn right on Chapel Avenue, which is the first stop sign after Garfield.  Drive past Woodward Avenue and you will see a parking structure on the right.

 From the south, take the 10 Freeway in either direction.  Exit on Garfield and go north (toward Alhambra),  Turn right on Main and left on Chapel. The parking structure will be on your left.

 We will walk in a section of Alhambra where most of you (except Rosie and Morris) have never been before.  This area includes the lovely Almansor Park.
